We all know career dynamics have shifted dramatically over the years. Gone are the days where college grads joined a company and stayed for life, rising through the ranks to win that ultimate workplace trophy: the corner office.
According to Business Week’s survey, people under the age of 30 change jobs almost once every three years. And really, it’s not surprising. Workers feel less incentive to stay put. Pensions, in the traditional sense, are virtually obsolete. Those employed are increasingly paying the price for the employer-sponsored health care. Loyalty is no longer about putting in time, or paying one's dues. It is about providing measurable value and being rewarded for it. Corporate culture has changed, and employees are responding to it in the only way that makes sense to them.
Surveys can only tell you so much, of course. But as much as anything, these top-line results suggest that most employed feel confident enough about their prospects for alternative employment to value the fulfillment they get from their job as much as—and sometimes more than— the financial rewards they receive. That might be of particular interest to a group of intermediate-or-higher income distribution, given their insistence that what they really wants to talk about is the sense of achievement. Voices, especially from those unemployed, certainly worry about job creation and GDP growth, but perhaps not the extent that economists seem to believe.
Mostly, people care about being happy and enjoying their lives, including their worklives. That’s true for experienced workers—those 55 and older—80% of whom rank mental work satisfaction highest among reasons given (vs. 58% of those 18 to34). And it’s true for female workers, too. Indeed, a new survey opens a window into research difficulties connecting to women, in that female respondents were consistently weighed their reasons for sticking around differently, who aremore likely than men to cite non-financial factors as major reasons for leavingthe job. For example, 72% of women cited the work-life fit, vs. 62% of men. Likewise, 59% of women cited a connection to the organization for which they worked, vs. 53% of men.
